Teams Phone Licensing

Users

  • First requirement: If a user's base license includes the Microsoft Teams Phone Standard License abilities, then the user will be eligible to have a UniVoIP phone number assigned to them. These base licenses may include the Microsoft Teams Phone Standard abilities: Microsoft 365 E5 or E7 / Microsoft 365 A5 or A7 / Office 365 E5 or E7 / Office 365 A5 or A7. If a user's base license does NOT include the Microsoft Teams Phone Standard License abilities, then the user will need to have a Microsoft Teams Phone Standard License added in Microsoft's 365 Admin Center.

  • Second requirement: A user must have access to Microsoft Teams. If the user's base license does NOT include access to Microsoft Teams, then the user must be assigned a Microsoft Teams license in Microsoft's 365 Admin Center, like the Microsoft Teams Essentials License.

  • Requirement for users that need to have the call out ability from within a Teams Meeting <for adding external participants on the fly>: Each user should be assigned the Microsoft Teams Audio Conferencing includes dial-out to USA/CAN only License in Microsoft's 365 Admin Center.

  • Requirement for users that need to be able to access Microsoft's Queues Application, or to be able to modify core configuration of an Auto-Attendant or Call Queue from within the settings area in the Microsoft Teams Application: Each user should be assigned the Microsoft Teams Premium License in Microsoft's 365 Admin Center.

 IP Phones

  • Phones intended for a user: No additional Microsoft licensing is needed because the user will sign into the phone using their Microsoft Credentials to make it their phone. The user signing into the phone must meet the first and second requirements listed in the Users section above. If the user is assigned a UniVoIP phone number, the user can place and receive calls to and from external phone numbers.

  • Requirement for a common area phone: A virtual user will need to be created in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. This virtual user will need to be assigned a Microsoft Teams Shared Space License in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, and this is the only Microsoft License the virtual user will need. The Microsoft Credentials for this virtual user can then be used to sign into a common area phone. If the virtual user is assigned a UniVoIP phone number, a person can use the desk phone to place and receive calls to and from external phone numbers.

 Auto-Attendants and Call Queues

  • Conditional Requirement: Both auto-attendants and call queues will need to have a "licensed" Microsoft Teams Resource Account assigned to them in the Microsoft Teams Admin Center to be eligible to have a phone number directly assigned to them and/or if the configuration is set to redirect a caller to an external number. Resource Accounts are created in the Microsoft Teams Admin Center and they are assigned a Microsoft Teams Resource Account license in Microsoft's 365 Admin Center. Microsoft Teams Resource Account licenses may be free licenses from Microsoft. You will need a unique Microsoft Teams Resource Account for each phone number you need to assign, even if more than one number needs to ring into the same auto-attendant or call queue.
